Norman Shaw North forms part of the Parliamentary Estate in Westminster and is one of the most significant heritage refurbishment projects undertaken within the UK public sector.
The Grade I listed building is being refurbished as part of the wider Northern Estate Programme, which aims to modernise and preserve key parliamentary buildings while maintaining their historic character and operational function.

Project Overview
As with many heritage refurbishment projects, the programme requires modern building systems to be integrated within an existing structure while maintaining the integrity of the original building fabric. This creates a demanding environment for both contractors and partners, requiring careful planning, technical expertise and strict adherence to project requirements.
Brymec secured and delivered the cast iron drainage package for the project, supplemented by additional pipework and fitting solutions from across Brymec’s supply ranges.
Brymec’s Involvement
Competing against a well-known manufacturer to secure the cast iron drainage package, Brymec demonstrated the suitability of its cast iron drainage system for the project’s requirements through a technical submission outlining the system’s performance and compliance credentials.
Brymec’s long-standing relationship with the contractor also played an important role throughout the process.
Having worked together successfully on previous projects, the contractor had confidence in both the quality of the system and Brymec’s ability to support the project from design through to delivery.
Following AECOM’s review and approval of the submission, Brymec successfully secured the package and was appointed to manufacture and supply the cast iron drainage systems required throughout the refurbishment.
The Challenge
The project presented significant logistical challenges. As part of the Parliamentary Estate, access and deliveries were subject to rigorous security protocols and site controls.
Careful coordination was required throughout the supply process to ensure materials were delivered in line with project requirements while complying with all necessary procedures.
Product Selection
Brymec Cast Iron Drainage was selected for the project due to its suitability for applications where durability, reliability and long-term performance are essential.
The system provides a complete A1 fire-rated, non-combustible whole-system solution certified to BS EN 13501-1, giving project stakeholders confidence in its fire performance, and providing a solution capable of meeting the requirements of this complex heritage refurbishment.
The Result
By successfully securing the package, displacing the incumbent manufacturer, and navigating the challenges associated with supplying a live Parliamentary Estate project, Brymec delivered a cast-iron drainage solution that met the project’s technical and logistical requirements.
The project also reflects the value of strong contractor-manufacturer relationships, combining technical expertise with the confidence built through successful collaboration on previous projects.
