Continuing our partnership with Croydon College

With our head office based in Coulsdon, Croydon is a borough that’s close to home for us, and one that represents a strong pipeline of future talent for our industry. With the shortage of young people entering building services continuing to be a key challenge, we began working locally to help make a difference, starting with exhibiting at the Croydon College careers fair earlier this year.

Building on that relationship, supporting and sponsoring the Croydon Youth Awards felt like a natural next step, an opportunity to not only celebrate young talent, but to help inspire and connect with the next generation.

As Marketing Executive at Brymec, here’s my take on an inspiring evening and everything it represented…

Led by young people, for young people

The evening was thoughtfully organised by an inspiring group of young people, celebrating their peers and recognising achievements in artistic talent, community contribution, and leadership. What made the night truly special was that it was led by young people, for young people. This was reflected throughout, from the confident young compères, to the entertainment, and even the wonderful canapés prepared by students from Croydon College. The brie and cranberry parcel was very moreish!

Fantastic performances

We were treated to a fantastic range of performances across the evening. Olivia captivated the entire room with her operatic performances of original compositions. Conversations paused and the room fell still as she sang, a truly mature and moving performance from a sixth-form student.

I also thoroughly enjoyed the performance from R&B multi-disciplinary artist, Laboll. Seamlessly blending UK rap, afro beats with a soulful, emotional singing voice, he had the audience completely engaged. His take on some timeless classics even had my toe tapping. Born in Sierra Leone and raised in Croydon, Laboll is someone the borough should be incredibly proud of.

A plethora of talents

Some of London’s brightest talent comes from Croydon

What stood out most to me was the overwhelming sense of hope and pride shared by every young person involved in the evening. Despite the often-negative press that communities like Croydon face, these young individuals are determined to challenge perceptions. This generation is ambitious, driven, and passionate about changing the narrative of their borough, showcasing that some of London’s brightest talent comes from Croydon.

A huge congratulations to everyone who worked tirelessly to deliver such an inspiring evening, and of course to all the wonderful nominees and winners.

At Brymec, we are incredibly proud to sponsor this event, especially as Croydon is home to our head office. I really appreciated being invited to attend, it was fantastic to be part of such a positive celebration within the borough we share.
