Careers Week plays an important role in helping young people explore the opportunities available to them as they prepare to enter the world of work. For many students, it’s a chance to meet industry professionals, ask honest questions, and gain a clearer understanding of what their chosen career path might really look like.

At a time when entering the job market can feel increasingly uncertain for young people, initiatives like this provide valuable connection and guidance. They help bridge the gap between education and industry, giving students confidence, insight, and inspiration as they begin shaping their futures.

A Sector Looking to the Future

Across the built environment, attracting the next generation of talent is becoming an increasingly important priority. The construction industry is facing a growing skills challenge, with fewer young people entering the sector in recent years. Currently, only around 19% of the UK construction workforce is aged 25 or under, highlighting the importance of encouraging and supporting new talent.

With the sector undergoing rapid change, driven by digital innovation, sustainability demands, and ambitious infrastructure goals, the construction industry needs young professionals now more than ever

Connecting with Students at Croydon College

As part of Careers Week, colleagues Anna Hunt, Charlotte Dale, and Ellie Wyatt-O’Reilly  had the pleasure of visiting Croydon College on Wednesday 4th March. The event took place at the heart of the campus on College Road, where students from across construction and built environment courses gathered to meet organisations and explore potential career paths.

Our team set up a welcoming stand with branded materials, information about the industry, and of course a generous supply of Brymec merchandise, sweets, and chocolates!

More importantly, the aim of the visit was to start conversations.

Throughout the event, the team spoke with students about their ambitions, what excites them about entering the construction industry, and how they imagine their careers unfolding. As well as informal discussions, the afternoon also included short interviews with learners to capture their perspectives and experiences during Careers Week. These conversations formed provided a genuine opportunity to listen to the voices of the next generation entering the industry.

Hearing From the Next Generation

When asked what originally inspired them to pursue construction, many students spoke about opportunity, creativity, and the ability to see tangible results from their work. One student explained that their interest stemmed from a desire “to develop new skills and widen my opportunities for the future, especially in technology, design, and green energy.” Another was motivated by the prospect of strong career prospects and the chance to contribute to large-scale developments, sharing that they liked the idea of “seeing my work openly in the streets we walk and being part of commercial projects that shape our cities.”

For others, it was the collaborative nature of the industry that stood out. One student highlighted that “the teamwork involved in construction and seeing what goes on behind the scenes” sparked their interest, particularly when it comes to sustainable and energy-focused projects. Long-term career potential also played a role for several students. One aspiring electrician explained that learning about the industry had strengthened their ambition to one day become a renewable energy technician, installing solar panels and green energy systems around the world.

The conversation also turned to the future of construction and the innovations that excite them most. Sustainability and environmental responsibility were recurring themes. One student spoke about the importance of safer and more sustainable materials, noting they hoped to see “the continued use of systems that improve the earths health through wind and solar power.”

Smart technologies and green building solutions were also high on the list of interests, with several students highlighting eco-friendly systems, renewable energy, and sustainable construction practices as the future of the industry. One student summed it up simply: “smart and green technology, and sustainable building solutions.” Another added that innovations such as wind and solar power systems that improve the health of the planet are particularly exciting developments.

Finally, the students were asked what advice they would give to someone considering a career in construction but are still unsure. Their responses were encouraging and grounded in their own experiences so far. One student suggested exploring the many different roles available, explaining that construction offers both practical, hands-on opportunities and office-based careers that contribute to building the infrastructure of the future.

Others highlighted the value of patience and continuous learning, encouraging future students to develop both practical and communication skills. One student reflected that construction could offer a reliable and fulfilling career path, noting that while it may take time to discover your passion within the industry, once you do there are countless opportunities to grow. “Go forward and do it. You have nothing to lose, a skill to gain, and one life to live.”

An Inspiring Afternoon

By 2pm, the event wrapped up, and the team left feeling energised by the conversations and enthusiasm they encountered throughout the afternoon.

Engaging with students is an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the future of our industry. For us, it’s also a chance to listen. Hearing how young people view the industry helps shape how we communicate, what we prioritise, and how we continue evolving as a business.

The talent, ideas, and optimism we saw at Croydon College are exactly what will move our industry forward, and we’re excited to continue supporting and welcoming this next generation into the built environment.

A huge thank you to Naheed Choudhary, Senior Careers Adviser at Croydon College, for hosting us and for organising such a vibrant Careers Week event. It was a pleasure to be involved and to meet so many motivated students preparing to take their first steps into the industry.
